THE EARLY SIGNS OF TERMITES

No one wants or plans for their home to become a feast for termites. Found in 49 states, termites are a national problem that cause approximately $5 billion in property damage for homeowners each year (and majority of the time these costs are not covered by homeowners insurance!) Not only is getting rid of termites and repairing the damage expensive, but it also can be very stressful. One of the best things to do to protect your property is to find the signs of termites early on before they can do massive damage.

While all termites in general seem to be frustration and terrorizing pests, there are actually many species of termites each with their own traits. The termite species most common in our area is the Eastern subterranean termite, and while some scenarios are easier to detect than others, there are a few telltale signs to lookout for. These early warning signs of termites include:

Mud Tunnels: These are small tunnels made out of soil or dirt accumulated on the outside of house structures – brickwork, walls, concrete posts, concrete slabs, wooden beams, and other dense structure materials. Unfortunately if you find these mud tunnels, it is a sure-fire sign of termites. Termites travel through these mud tunnels as it connects termites to food sources and water.

Frass: This is another word for termite droppings. Little piles of these pellets, which look a bit like sawdust on the floor, could be a sign of termite infestation.

Cracks and Fissures: Cracks in wood surfaces aren’t always a sign of termites, but by the time you notice fissures in the wood, the structure might be long gone. Since termites eat away wood from the inside, check to see if a piece of wood is hollow by tapping or puncturing it.

Discarded Wings / Swarmers: Generally, the first sign noticed by homeowners is discarded insect wings on a windowsill or even the flying bugs themselves. The flying insects are often seen near windows or indoor light. These flying termites are called swarmers which are termite reproductives, and they are active throughout the spring and early summer. Seeing these bugs flying inside or near your home does not always mean the nest is inside your home, as it could be nearby instead, but it is definitely a strong sign your home needs an inspection.

Unfortunately, even if you don’t see any of the above signs of termites, that does not always mean that they are not there. In order to prevent termites being attracted to your home be sure to have your home inspected regularly by a professional at Black Diamond!
