Many people will ask why they need to clean their air ducts. The answer to that question is simple really — because just like other parts of your home, whether they are out of sight or not, they will get dirty! Another reason you should consider having your air ducts cleaned is to improve the indoor air quality of your everyday environment. Research shows that in a standard six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living.

Through normal day-to-day living in a home, we generate a large amount of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. This re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work over time. While dirty ducts do not necessarily mean unhealthy air in your home, they may contribute to larger issues that could cause problems for people with allergies, respiratory health problems, or autoimmune disorders.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) both agree there is some benefit in cleaning debris from air ducts, furnaces, central air conditioners, and ventilation. The EPA suggests cleaning as needed, such as when mold, pests, or excessive debris is cluttering the system. The NADCA on the other hand, recommends that homeowners should clean their ducts once every three to five years, and even more often if someone in the home suffers from allergies or asthma. There are also some factors as to how often you should consider getting your air ducts cleaned, including:

  • indoor pets
  • smoking
  • recent renovations
  • local weather conditions
  • overall home cleanliness

In addition to health benefits, a thorough air duct cleaning can also help with long-term savings on your monthly energy bills! A clean system will lead to a more productive system. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted, and contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder — ultimately, shortening the life of your system. Even though filters are used with the system, the HVAC still gets built up dust and dirt with normal use.

So, for a quick round-up — a few quick benefits of clean air ducts include:

  1. A safer living environment
  2. Remove allergens and mold
  3. Reduce illness
  4. Lower your monthly energy bill
  5. Protect yourself and your family!
